Truncation strategies in two-sided matching markets: Theory and experiment
نویسندگان
چکیده
We investigate strategic behavior in a centralized matching clearinghouse based on the GaleShapley deferred acceptance algorithm. To do so, we conduct a laboratory experiment to test whether agents strategically misrepresent their preferences by submitting a “truncation” of their true preferences. Our experimental design uses a restricted environment in which subjects always have a best-response in truncation strategies. We find that subjects do not truncate their preferences more often when truncation is profitable. They do, however, truncate less often when truncation is dangerous that is, when there is a risk of “over-truncating” and remaining unmatched. Our findings suggest that eliminating profitable opportunities for strategic behavior may not be sufficient to induce participants to report their true preferences. JEL codes: C78, C92, D47

Manipulability in matching markets: conflict and coincidence of interests
We study comparative statics of manipulations by women in the menproposing deferred acceptance mechanism in the two-sided one-to-one marriage market. We prove that if a group of women weakly successfully manipulates or employs truncation strategies, then all other women weakly benefit and all men are weakly harmed. We show that these results do not appropriately generalize to the manyto-one col...
متن کاملClearinghouses for two-sided matching: An experimental study
We study the performance of two-sided matching clearinghouses in the laboratory. Our experimental design mimics the Gale-Shapley (1962) mechanism, utilized to match hospitals and interns, schools and pupils, etc., with an array of preference profiles. Several insights come out of our analysis. First, only 48% of the observed match outcomes are fully stable. Furthermore, among those markets endi...
متن کاملStrategic Behavior in Matching Markets
Centralized two-sided markets, such as the market for medical residents, often rely on a stable matching mechanism to determine a matching between participants. Because no stable matching mechanism can induce truth-telling as a dominant strategy for all participants, there is always some room in these markets for strategic misrepresentation. In this paper we study optimal strategic misrepresent...
متن کاملIncentive Compatibility of Large Centralized Matching Markets
We study the manipulability of stable matching mechanisms. To quantify incentives to manipulate stable mechanisms, we consider markets with random cardinal utilities, which induce ordinal preferences over match partners. We show that most agents in large matching markets are close to being indifferent overall stable matchings. In oneto-one matching, the utility gain by manipulating a stable mec...
متن کاملOn the exhaustiveness of truncation and dropping strategies in many-to-many matching markets
We consider two–sided many–to–many matching markets in which each worker may work for multiple firms and each firm may hire multiple workers. We study individual and group manipulations in centralized markets that employ (pairwise) stable mechanisms and that require participants to submit rank order lists of agents on the other side of the market. We are interested in simple preference manipula...
